It was a day of firsts for two teams at the Central District indoor track and field championships.
Matoaca’s boys and Colonial Heights’ girls teams won their first ever indoor district titles at the Arthur Ashe Center on Thursday.
The Warriors scored 124 points to hold off second-place Thomas Dale (91). The Knights were the three-time defending champions.
“We are definitely going in a good direction,” Matoaca coach Jerry Price said. “We’ve always had a strong program but have always fallen a little bit short with a lot of second-places. We want to keep working hard and sustain this into the outdoor season.”
Girls defending champions Prince George were not in attendence and were disqualified after their superintendent ruled that because of bad weather traveling to meet would be unsafe.
That opened the door for the Colonials girls.
The team finished with a score of 156 to best second-place Thomas Dale’s 119.
“This is great coming off of the cross country victory,” Colonial Heights coach Damon Talley said. “Our goal now is to get all three. We have a good group of girls and a good group of freshman.
Both Price and Talley garnered coach-of-the-year honors.
Matoaca’s Dorian Jackson was named runner of the year for the boys and Wesley Benitiz earned field event athlete of the year.
Jackson won the 300-meter dash with a time of 38.35 and was part of the 4×400-meter relay team that was victorious at 3:45.06. Josh Moore, Reuben Gaines and Alex Coffey were the other three members of the squad.
“I think I had a pretty good day,” Jackson said. “It could always be better but you know, just keep practicing hard and next week I can do my thing.”
On the girls side, Colonial Heights took both awards with Shae Wilbon (runner of the year) and Megan Sinclair (field event athlete of the year).
Wilbon took the 55-meter dash (7.49) and the 500-meter dash (1:24.41). Sinclair won the long jump at 16-9, was second in the 500- and 300-meter dashes and was third in the high jump and 55-meter hurdles.

Saturday’s Position Specifics Offensive Clinic turned out 60 more athletes and spirited instruction from top-notch football players and coaches.
Quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and offensive linemen enjoyed 2-1/2 hours of instruction.
For some it was their second time at a PS clinic. The defensive clinic kicked the year off last week at U-Turn Sports Performance Academy.
“It helps me a lot,” said Omar White, a rising senior at Henrico who works in the trenches on both sides of the ball. “It gives me a big jump to better myself for the next year. It’s keeping me focused in the offseason.”
Some of the same counselors were present again, of course that includes PS founders Chad Blackstock and Kevin Lewis.
Lewis’ brother Jonathan, an NFL defensive lineman with the Seattle Seahawks, made another appearance.
As did Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Jason Murphy, which was certainly a treat for the Central Region’s young lineman.
Former Virginia State All-American Damon “Redd” Thompson tutored the wide receivers, and Highland Springs coach Eddie Handsome and former Virginia Tech star Mike Crawford handled the running backs.
“It’s a good group of guys out here working together,” Atlee’s Tyler White said. “Everybody seems to get along pretty well. A lot of talent out here as well. I’ve seen some of the best group of guys.”

The Central Region had yet another productive Signing Day Wednesday, highlighted by Hermitage and Highland Springs having six of their football players sign scholarships.
The Panthers had Ju-Ju Clayton (Virginia Tech), Jamel Davis (Coastal Carolina), Terrell Lynch (VMI), Justin Carr (Towson), Justin White (Shepherd, W.Va) and Dominique Booker (Towson).
The Springers boasted Antoine Hopkins (Va. Tech), Rod Wheeler (Virginia), Harry Lee Daniel (Richmond), Marcus Burley (Delaware), Matthew Hurdle (Kent State) and J.J. Spates (Chowan).
Many other schools have football stars signed and delivered.
Twin brothers Cameron and Ryan Jude of Manchester are headed to Michigan State and Kent State, respectively. Brandon Harrington (Virginia State) and Ryan Bouldin (Chowan) also made it official for the Lancers.
Meadowbrook had three players ink their names in Michael Williams (Youngstown State), Bryant Frazier (Florida A&M) and Aaron Lewis (VMI).
But football wasn’t the only sport that received John Hancocks today.
For instance, Adam Taylor (Lee-Davis) signed with Virginia for track, and Hunter Cheatham is headed to Virginia Tech for soccer.
A bunch of student-athletes are set to sign later in the week as well in various sports.
