2008 field hockey top 10/ district previews

Field Hockey Top 10
(Records as of Monday, Sept. 8)

1. Thomas Dale (3-0)
2. James River (1-0)
3. Maggie Walker (2-0)
4. Mills Godwin (1-0)
5. Deep Run (2-0)
6. Lee-Davis (3-1)
7. Henrico (2-0)
8. Cosby (1-1)
9. Prince George (1-0)
10. Midlothian (1-0)

District Outlook
CAPITAL DISTRICT
– Six starters are returning for Lee-Davis, the Capital favorite. Twin billing is in order, as juniors Kelsey and Ashley Reynolds return after registering 16 goals apiece last season. The Confederates should also get a boost from soccer keeper Janie Evans, who gets back into the pipes. Jessica Ravensbergen will punish you if you pay too much attention to the Reynolds’. The defenders are junior-laden.

– Henrico is next in line. Jessica Cooney‘s squad opened eyes last season. Miranda Germano and Anjani Parikh return to keep the momentum going. Someone is going to have to step in the shoes of the graduated Lauren Guerra in goal and Suzi Lindquist at forward. Look for Atlee and Hanover to push the Warriors.

CENTRAL DISTRICT
– Queen of the Central is no doubt Thomas Dale, the defending Central Region champions. They return the best player in the area in reigning DigitalSports player of the year Julie Robertson. Madison Parrish is terrific at sweeper. Look out for Caitlin Bailey, Kati Crews and Kelsey Whittleton, all seniors, to make up for the loss of seven seniors like Carrie Jaeckle, Loren Favale and keeper Miranda Lojek.

– Prince George is pushing to become a definite contender. The Royals are very young but have a terrific defense led by keeper Emily Lipp.

COLONIAL DISTRICT
– The Colonial has a trio of tough teams, starting with Maggie Walker. All-DigitalSports pick Deirdre Gill returns with Katelyn Daughtery, Kelsey Huffer, Elle Donnini and Amanda Watson. All are seniors. MW lost region player of the year Amarachi Eseonu, but the Green Dragons still have plenty to try to fend off Godwin and Deep Run, two very formidable opponents.

– The Eagles have a high-octane offense led by Hayley Stough, a 38-goal scorer in 2007. Leadership from senior Michelle Foley and junior midfielder Sallie Foster will help. Paige Ricca is stout at goal.

– Deep Run’s high-scoring Brittany Stein has graduated, but plenty is left to make Deep Run a dangerous team. Look for Kaitlyn Carlyle, Anne Claire Murray and Audrey Hester (67 goals combined last season) to duplicate or increase their totals from last season. If Deep Run’s defense can pick up their performance to help break in a new keeper, the Wildcats could be a tough out any afternoon.

DOMINION DISTRICT
– The Dominion runs through James River. The Rapids lost a great deal, but have a good hand coming back.
All-DigitalSports pick Jenna Taylor is back after registering 23 goals. Gina Grimes is a terrific, physical player.

– Cosby, Midlothian, Monacan, Clover Hill and Manchester were all Dominion District teams that gave each other fits last season, along with nondistrict opponents. Expect the same this season with players like Lindsey Marr (Monacan), Katie Appleby (Midlothian), Jennifer Tennison and Kelsey Powell (Cosby) returning.

The South of the river is always tough in field hockey.

2008 girls volleyball Top 10/district previews

Girls Volleyball Top 10
(Records as of Saturday, Sept. 6)

1. Deep Run (3-2)

2. Hanover (3-2)

3. Mills Godwin (1-3)

4. James River (4-3)

5. Cosby (5-2)

6. Atlee (2-0)

7. Midlothian (4-2)

8. Monacan (3-1)

9. Hermitage (3-2)

10. Thomas Dale (0-1)

CAPITAL DISTRICT
Hanover is the clear cut favorite to take the Capital District again and is ranked No. 2 in the first DigitalSports Top 10. The Hawks fell to Deep Run in five games during the Virginia Volleyball Showcase but defeated an injury-depleted Wildcats four days later in three sets. Penn State-bound Kristin Carpenter (OH) returns for her senior season as Hanover looks to improve on their run to the region semifinals last year. Seniors Katie Hudencial (S), Kim Browning (MB) and Taylour Hopkins (OH) help to make up an experienced squad with high expectations.
Atlee is the other ranked team after making it to the region tournament last year. They will be led by Katilyn Allen and Rachel Winfrey and should battle with Lee-Davis for second place in the district. Confederate senior Sarah Neely (MH) and junior Rachel Grimesey (S) are two of the stronger players in the district.

CENTRAL DISTRICT
Defending district champ Thomas Dale should still be the team to beat in the Central. Hannah Curley has graduated but sophomore first-team all-district member Kalia Johnson will continue her progression as a top player. The Knights fell in the region quarters last season to Deep Run.
Prince George’s only two losses in district last season came at the hands of Thomas Dale. Senior setter Heather Lewis and junior outside hitters Brittany Johnson and Sarah Ham should pace the Royals.

COLONIAL DISTRICT
Back-to-back state champions Deep Run of course are on top of the first rankings. Injuries to key players contributed to a three-game loss to Hanover but at full strenghth the Wildcats were able to get by the Hawks at the volleyball showcase. Senior outside hitter and middle Meghann Forshey (broken pinky) and junior outside hitter and middle Mallory Woolridge (stress fracture in ankle) should heal within the next few weeks. Gone is graduated player of the year Alyssa Lang and sophomore Chaney LaReau, who played a huge role for Deep Run last season, will miss the whole season due to a torn ACL. Lindsey McClellan (S), Callie Armistead (O) and Erin Anderson are also important players on the team.
Mills Godwin comes in at No. 3 after losing five key contributers from an Eagles team that won the distrist and advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament. Senior Elizabeth Drewry (MB) and juniors Meghan Meleski (S) and Maggie Murphy (OH/S) will be asked to fill the voids. Erin Fitzgerald and Hermitage and Douglas Freeman should also be a tough team from the district.

DOMINION DISTRICT
The Domonion may be the deepest district and defending champ James River is currently the team to beat. The Rapids already own a five-set victory over Cosby. Senior Heather Brentzel (L/OH) gives the team some experience while juniors Julia Cushman (S), Sarah Lawrence (OPP) and Kate Darlington (OH) provides the team with a young nucleus.
The Titans fell in the region quarters last year and look to improve upon that this season. First-team all-region selection Mallory Carter is one of the most skilled outside hitters in the area and will benefit from on point sets from junior Abbie Holt. Juniors Jessica Melhorn (OH) and Morgan Dowdy (MB) will also provide offense. Midlothian behind Gretchen Wilson and Valerie Carroll and Monacan with Emily Beckner and Mandy Hopkins look to also be contenders.

2008 boys volleyball Top 10/district previews

Boys Volleyball Top 10
(Records as of Friday, Sept. 5)

1. Thomas Dale (1-0)

2. Deep Run (6-0)

3. Cosby (6-1)

4. L.C. Bird (5-1)

5. James River (1-2)

6. Douglas Freeman (4-1)

7. J.R. Tucker (3-1)

8. Clover Hill (2-4)

9. Mills Godwin (3-2)

10. Lee-Davis (3-2)

CAPITAL DISTRICT
Lee-Davis comes in at No. 10 as the only ranked team from the district. The Confederates defeated Hanover in five games to claim ninth place at the Virginia Volleyball Showcase last weekend. They had victories against Hermitage and First Colonial. The Hawks should be right behind Lee-Davis in the standings as they drop off just a little from last season when they reached the Central Region quarterfinals. Atlee and Highland Springs should round out the rest of the top four in the district.

CENTRAL DISTRICT
Defending state champion Thomas Dale starts off ranked No. 1 in the Top 10. First-team all-state selection Bradley Johnston (S/OH) returns to the Knights for his senior year after posting 200 kills, 350 assists and 75 blocks last season. Seniors Alex Hoffman (OH/MB) and Ethan Cammer (L/DS) give the young team some experience. Juniors Zach Seymour (S/OH) and Matt Knickerbocker (MB/OH) will need to step up as key players and fill the voids left by player of the year Michael Blankenbecler and David Cole.
Austin Woods and Matoaca will most likely battle for second place in the district with Prince George and Colonial Heights.

COLONIAL DISTRICT
Second-ranked Deep Run brings back six starters from a team that went 21-3 and made it to the Central Region semifinals in 2007. The Wildcats have a ton of experience and won the showcase title over Cosby. Seniors Patrick Maloney (OH), Phil Slocum (S), John Grove (M) and first-team all-region Brian Fitzsimmons (L) lead the team that should contend for a region championship.
Second place in the district could be a serious competition between at least five teams. Nathan Manley and Douglas Freeman have started the season off great with a 4-1 record that includes a victory over Clover Hill in the showcase for fifth-place. J.R. Tucker has also shown promise while Will Sheranek and Mills Godwin should be competitive. Maggie Walker GS and Patrick Henry could surprise some teams.

DOMINION DISTRICT
In their second year as a program Cosby advanced all the way to the region semifinals last season before losing to eventual state champion Thomas Dale. The Titans should remain a force this year in possibly the toughest district. Gone is first-team all-region selection Austin Jones but Cosby still garners a No. 3 ranking. Seniors Grant Fields (MB/OPP) and Steven Higbie (MB) and junior Brent Zackon (S) led the team to the showcase finals where they lost to Deep Run.
No. 4 L.C. Bird was almost as impressive in the showcase finishing third with a victory over Frank Cox. Josh Smith, Travis Heath and Davey McKifflick have played well early for the Skyhawks. James River will rely on Taylor Anderson, Ryan Moore and Neal Warner to stay around the top of the rankings and Clover Hill will also contend.

Preseason DigitalSports football team

The first preseason DigitalSports Richmond football team is full of Division I prospects and commits; guys who have proved they are a person to be reckoned with at their positions every Friday night or Saturday afternoon.
Find out more about them below!

OFFENSE

QuarterbackAdam Morgan, Dinwiddie, Sr.: Morgan threw for a stupid 33 TDs last season, leading Dinwiddie to a 9-2 season, its best in years. He’ll play a lot of safety this season as well to attract more recruiters. Because of his size, colleges are missing on a solid passer.

Honorable mention: Antone Exum, Deep Run; Theron Norman, Hermitage; Dustin Clark, Matoaca

Running backsTrey Johnson, Varina, Jr.: Johnson didn’t put up ridiculous numbers because he shared carries with two other ballcarriers. Should light up the region this season. He had 163 yards and three TDs on just seven carries in the season-opener.

Jordan Love, Deep Run, Sr.: We had to fit the Maryland transfer in somewhere, he’s too talented. He’s going to Georgia to play corner, but if you’ve seen his Rivals highlights, he’s a terrific back as well. Should be poison with Antone Exum in the backfield.

Honorable mention: Deontay Quarles, Prince George; Terry Williams, Cosby

Wide receiversJerrell White, Dinwiddie, Sr.: White and Dequan Coles lit up the area last season. Now White and Sam Haskins have the same opportunity. Great speed and hands.

Melquan Weston, Highland Springs, Sr.: Weston’s combination of size and speed have him as a dangerous option outside. Can the Springers get the ball to him consistently? He will also return kicks.

Honorable mention: Bobby Smith, Varina; Jamison Kinney, Patrick Henry; Monty Smalley, Douglas Freeman

Tight endDuan Perez-Means, Hermitage, Sr.: Our easiest selection. Perez-Means, headed to Virginia Tech, is just about unstoppable at any position on the field. His size (6-4) and hands are an unmatched combo in this area.

Honorable mention: Tyler Johnson, Prince George; Michael Goad, Matoaca

Offensive linemenMorgan Moses, Meadowbrook, Sr.: At 6-8, 330 pounds, a true dancing bear and the most sought-after Central Region prospect since Victor “Macho” Harris. An all-DigitalSports pick in 2007.

Jonathan Crawley, Huguenot, Sr.: Another mammoth tackle at 6-7, 350 pounds. Also a basketball center, which shows his athleticism.

Tyler White, Atlee, Sr.: One of the most physical players in the area. White loves contact and should open gaping holes for Atlee.

Derrick Tinsley, Meadowbrook, Sr: A huge option, 6-0, 290 pounds at guard. Sits beside Moses on MBK’s line, offensively and defensively.

Sakori Wilson, Varina, Sr.: A smooth combo of size and quickness, Wilson has been getting it done for years.

Honorable mention: Nick Watts, Dinwiddie

DEFENSE

Defensive linemenDeAntre Rhodes, Varina, Sr.:  First-team all-Central Region last season. One of the top defensive linemen in the state.

Jake Snyder, Deep Run, Sr.: Already committed to Virginia. Stout against the run and pass. A stud at DE and TE.

Derrick Hopkins, Highland Springs, Jr.: One of only two juniors on our preseason team. Hopkins is a three-year starter and has to be double teamed every play if you want it to run correctly. First-team all-Capital District in 2007.

B.J. Morton, Matoaca, Sr.: An offseason warrior with Kevin Lewis and Position Specifics. Offers are pouring in from Division I colleges.

Honorable mention: Blake Jones, Hanover; Jonathan Durrett, Manchester

LinebackersKenny Fryman, Hanover, Sr.: First-team all-Central Region in 2007. Not a workout warrior, but put the tape in and he makes play after play. A sure tackler. All-DigitalSports in 2007.

Bradley Johnson, Dinwiddie, Sr.: Johnson committed to Maryland after being sought by many. Virginia Tech, West Virginia and even Duke, among others, offered. A smooth combination of size (6-2, 210) and speed (4.5-4.6 range).

Adrian Cavanaugh, Patrick Henry, Sr.: JMU, Navy and William & Mary are a few of his suitors. He’s been on the region radar for years. This year may be his time to shine brightly.

Honorable mention: Carl Smith III, Highland Springs; Austin Hersh, James River; Billy Skrobacz, Deep Run; Doug Fraser, Douglas Freeman; Randall Braxton, John Marshall

Defensive backsT.K. Hester, Varina, Sr.: Will play mostly LB this season, but is a stellar DB. Tore up the Position Specifics elite camp. Syracuse and Columbia on his list. A 3.5 GPA student.

Antone Exum, Deep Run, Sr.: – At 6-1, 210 pounds and with 4.5 speed and excellent leaping ability, he’s a dream at safety. Stupid range from sideline to sideline. VT, Tennessee, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Maryland, you name it, they’re watching.

Theron Norman, Hermitage, Sr.: Virginia Tech commit is entering his third season as a starter at safety. He’s 6-3, 190 pounds and not afraid to hit. Terrific hands.

Steven Fogleman, Hanover, Sr.: His stock rose after a terrific game in which Hanover almost upset No. 1 Highland Springs. His fundamentals are impeccable and he is a fearless tackle. Good speed and great angles.

Honorable mention: Jordan Love, Deep Run (see above at RB); Garrett Patterson, Monacan; Clinton Patterson, Highland Springs

Punter/KickerHaden Dyer, Patrick Henry: Dyer has a tremendous leg that usually results in touchbacks. A soccer player.

Kick returnerDennis Odom, George Wythe, Jr.: Second-team all-region last season. Electrifying in the open field.
