What a night at the 2009 Central District Wrestling Tournament!!!

All I can say is I may have witnessed one of the greatest matches ever!!!

Cody Allala vs. Blake Roulo, Round 3 (I don’t count the preseason meeting at the Super 32).

1st period: Cody gets take down with about 30 some seconds left and rides Blake out. (2-0 Allala)

2nd period: Cody takes bottom and gets an early escape. Period ends with both wrestlers on feet. (3-0 Allala)

3rd period: Roulo takes bottom and gets an escape. With about 20 seconds left Blake gets an out-of-bounds take down, which was extremely controversial, and the ref calls out of bounds…no takedown. Time runs out with both wrestlers on their feet. (Allala wins 3-1)

Now to explain to everyone the controversy I put a post on the Central Region Forum that I’m also including in this article and it reads:

“You know we can get on here and complain and fight and argue and whine on rather Roulo had a takedown or not. Just remember folks Referee George Jokish (sp) had the best seat in the house. He explained afterwards that yes it was 2 for when they landed out of bounds but Blake had stepped on the line first which means both him and Cody were out.

It was such a wonderful match by two hard competitors and honestly Central Region it may have been one of the best matches I’ve ever witnessed in my 11 years of being a wrestling fan.

Both these guys will have another barn burner next week at James River. I GUARANTEE!!!”

I hope this is able to put some minds at ease for wondering what the referee was seeing that we weren’t. I talked to both wrestlers after the match and they both had some positive things to say.

DNash: Guys what was going through your mind on the controversial takedown?
Roulo: “My feet are in, his hips were down, I got a takedown.”
Allala: “I was confident on my feet even if we went to OT.”

DNash: What is your mindset for the next two weekends?
Roulo: “I’m looking forward to Regions. In the finals of the Big Blue (Christiansburg tourney) there was a questionable takedown there. I should be able to take him down at Regions and States.
Allala: “Don’t overlook anyone…take one match at a time…be more focused and bust my **** more at practice this week. Regions right now don’t matter to me as much as winning states.”

As you can see Central Region we are going to be treated to what I believe will be two more fantastic matchups before the season’s over.

Opinions
There was another rough call made at the end of the 2nd period in the 130-pound weight class.

Jarrett Fields had an ankle pick for a takedown but the ref said time had run out and so therefore he didn’t reward a “2” which I wasn’t too sure if I agreed with it.

I want to praise the 285-pound weight class in the Central District. The final was a great match with Granderson winning 4-2. Both him and LaRoyce are super kids and just really good down-to-earth guys. Rogerson of Dinwiddie showed heart and soul as he finished his match with a bad knee. You could tell he was hurting but elected to go on….Congrats, Daniel.

Well, ladies and gentlemen it was a great day at the Central District and I hope everyone else had great tournaments, too. This is a big week coming up for the boys in preparing for regionals. Good luck to all!!!

Wrestling at James River will start at both noon on Friday and Saturday Feb 13th and 14th. It is a beautiful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend!!!
